About This Hike

Sendero PNT 01 La Fortaleza is one of the most accessible and rewarding trails in Teide National Park. Starting at the El Portillo Visitor Centre, the route passes through a fascinating volcanic landscape surrounded by some of Tenerife’s most remarkable endemic plants.

One of the main highlights of this walk is the opportunity to see the spectacular Red Tajinaste, one of the most iconic flowers of the Canary Islands. During the flowering season, Tajinastes can often be found near the visitor centre at the beginning of the trail, while larger concentrations appear towards the end of the route around the slopes of La Fortaleza.

Along the way, hikers may also encounter other characteristic Teide plants, including:

❤️ Red Tajinaste (Echium wildpretii) in June
🤍 Teide White Broom / Retama del Teide (Spartocytisus supranubius)
💛 Codeso del Teide (Adenocarpus viscosus)
🌼 Teide daisies and other mountain wildflowers
🌲 Canary Island Pine
🌿 Juniper and other endemic high-mountain vegetation

These colourful blooms contrast beautifully against the black and ochre volcanic terrain, creating one of the most unique landscapes in Tenerife.

The trail is relatively easy, making it suitable for most visitors, and offers magnificent views of Mount Teide throughout much of the route. Whether you are visiting for photography, flower spotting, or simply to enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery, this hike is a wonderful introduction to the natural beauty of Teide National Park.
